COLONIZED COUNTRIES INQUIRY PROJECT

Objectives:

Upon completion of their inquiry projects, students will:

1. Be able to identify and locate colonized countries on a map.

2. Be able to identify on a timeline significant events which occurred in the colonized country during the period of colonization and thereafter.

3. Be able to describe the following aspects of the colonized countries prior to and subsequent to colonization: government, distinctive aspects of culture including religion, dress, traditions and food.

4. Be able to describe the effects of colonization on the people and on the environment of the colonized country.

 

Instructional Procedures:

Students will take the colonizing country they researched in Lesson Plan #1 and choose a country colonized by that nation as the subject for their inquiry project.

Students will conduct research in the library and on the web regarding the colonized country and prepare a presentation to the class.

Students will use at least one primary source.

In their presentations, students will describe the following aspects of the colonized country prior to and subsequent to colonization: government, distinctive aspects of culture including religion, dress, traditions and food. Students will also describe the effects of colonization on the people and on the environment of the colonized country.

Students will use a timeline to indicate the period of colonization and identify significant events which occurred during and after colonization.

Students will use a map to locate the colonizing country, the colonized country and the paths and patterns of migration to the colonized country.

   
   
   
       
   
   
   
         
 

Assessment Methods

Students will be presented with blank maps and they will be instructed to identify and locate five colonized countries and the countries that colonized them.

Students will be presented with timelines and they will be instructed to identify periods of colonization, and indicate and describe the occurrence of significant events during and after colonization.

Students' oral presentations will be rubric scored regarding creativity, organization, use of primary sources, clarity, enunciation, ability to be heard, eye contact and appropriate use of gestures.
